07 Mar MOBLEY – SXSW SPOTLIGHT
MOBLEY | INTERVIEW
Austin native, singer, songwriter and producer, Anthony Watkins II, otherwise known as Mobley, was recently featured in Austin Monthly as a Band to Watch, and we agree with that. This artist has a lot of music up his sleeve, and we are eager to hear more of his buzzing electronic beats and R&B vocals. MIOW got to ask Mobley a few questions about his music creation process and his upcoming tour. Check it out!
Who or what inspired you to create music?
I can hardly remember what set it all in motion. I was filling notebooks with melodic ideas and songs, even before I knew how to play an instrument.
You directed your latest music video, Swoon, where did you get the idea? I love the simplicity of the video, and yet you still can’t turn away.
Thanks. I’m not sure exactly where the idea came from, but it bounced around in my head for over a year before we shot it, before I even wrote the song. I’m really proud of the way it captures the feelings of suffocation and isolation that the song addresses.
You’re about to go on your Hound the World tour…. any venue you’re specifically excited about playing at?
Swoon, the first single off my forthcoming EP, Some Other Country, has been very popular in Mexico City. It has over half a million plays on Spotify, and many of the listeners are from Mexico and other parts of the Spanish-speaking world. This is especially exciting, because my drummer, Alfredo Rios, is from Monterrey. So I’m looking forward to playing El Imperial in Mexico City and a few other venues in San Miguel de Allende and Monterrey, meeting some Mobley fans there.
How would you describe your music to someone that’s never heard it?
In terms of genre, I’m all over the place. In the interest of brevity, I’d probably just send them to www.mobleywho.com.
Tell me about your music creation process.
My process is solitary and fairly obsessive. Some song idea or melody will occur to me. Then I usually just shut myself in my studio with instruments and recording equipment, hunting for the sounds and concepts I want until I capture them or they elude me.
When will your debut full length album, Fresh Lies, be released?
I’ll be releasing an EP, Some Other Country. It goes on pre-sale this week and will be released on April 8th. Right now we’re focusing on that, then we’ll work on making sure we can get Fresh Lies out to the widest audience possible.
What can listeners expect to hear on this album?
The album explores themes of isolation and belonging through the metaphor of a relationship. So the songs can be enjoyed on a superficial level as love songs, or on a deeper level as meditations on citizenship, place, and identity.
What lead you to scrap the prior two albums that you were working on?
Looking back, I can only guess that it was some kind of madness.
Anything else you’d like to talk about?
I’m very much looking forward to SXSW this year, particularly the MIOW showcase — the lineup and venue are great and it’s really a worthy cause.
