Highland Park Care Center is located in the historical Heights district of Houston, Texas and was the first care center in Harris County to adopt our Personalized Music Program. Casey Waldner, Manager of the legendary Sugarhill Recording Studios facilitated our Personalized Music Program with this group of residents through multiple Music Discovery Outings. Volunteer groups made up of local musicians and music lovers of all ages sat with residents 1-on-1 in order to curate playlists near and dear to their heart. During our Music Discovery Outings amazing stories almost always naturally self compose. Among these were stories of listening to secretly listening to restricted radio stations featuring Motown during WWII Germany. Ray Rush shared multiple stories of a musical past, co-writing Roy Orbison’s, “Pretty Woman” and managing Prism, Buddy Holly’s first record label. The beautiful Ms. Eddie (seen here in her purple smock) had just earlier that week received news that she had lost her son to illness. Graciously she accepted our gift of music and consumed herself in classic Gospel Hymns as if she were with her church choir. It’s stories like these led by the commonality of music that make these Music Discovery Outings the backbone of our program. We returned a few days before Christmas as part of our 12 Days of Christmas Campaign to sing carols and deliver the devices for consistent use in the care center.
Since our program kicked off in Houston, Sugarhill Studios gave birth to the NEXT WAVE Compilation Album Series to help fund this project and it has taken legs of its own! Read more and listen to the NEXT WAVE album here.
